Funny
An observer from the last century would be awe-struck by the improvement in our standard of living, and by the amount of leisure time our technology and electronic devices have provided. Few Americans work consistently more than a 50-hour work week, and most work 44 hours or less. Furthermore, we now live an average of 12 years longer than we did 100 years ago, and have at least one-third more disposable income per family. Why is it, then, that most Americans, even professing Christians are “too busy” for serve God?
- FUNNY how laborious it is to read a chapter in the Bible, but how easy it is to read a few hundred pages in some best-selling novel!
- FUNNY how fifty dollars looks so big when you take it to church, and yet so small when you take it to the store!
- FUNNY how we can’t think of anything to say when we pray, but have no difficulty thinking of things to say when we chat for hours with a friend!
- FUNNY how it seems we need two or three weeks advance notice to fit into our schedule a church event, but are able to adjust to other invitations on the spur of the moment!
- FUNNY??? Not really. It is actually solemn and serious! It is “funny” how things reveal our priorities to the reign of Jesus Christ in our lives.
Christian people in America today, for the most part, have grown complacent and comfortable in God’s blessings and have forgotten the first commandment. Since God simply asks for our obedience, rather than demanding it, many Christians just ignore the very reason for our existence: To worship and glorify God!
God has a unique and meaningful plan for every believer, and it doesn’t depend upon your age, income, or abilities. Rather, it involves availability and obedience to Jesus Christ. What a loss is ours if we allow temporary comforts and laziness to rob us of true riches, both now and for eternity. So here is the alternative for each Christian: Decide to be used of the Lord in a significant manner, or be by-passed in favor of another.
Devotedly your pastor,
