FEAR
Psychiatrists tell us that all babies are born with only two innate fears: (1) the fear of falling, and (2) the fear of loud noises. But then, they say, we can develop hundreds of other “classified fears,” which means that they are all learned fears.
Most of us are shaped by our experiences throughout life, and our defining experiences can plant in our psyche a seed of confidence or a seed of uncertainty, a seed of faith or a seed of fear. Years ago, my father gave me some excellent advice that I would like to share with you now, and I hope it will help you as it has helped me. He said, “Son, never take counsel from your fears!” We all seek counsel, and from various places, persons, and sources, but as we seek God’s direction, “never take counsel from your fears.”
Scripture tells us (I John 4:18a) that “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out our fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made complete in love.” The words “perfect love” do not describe our love for God, but rather God’s unfailing love toward us. So, may I suggest that as we grow in God’s “perfect love” that we unlearn the fears that neutralize our spiritual growth and effectiveness in Kingdom ministry?
Our only God-ordained fear is to be the fear of the Lord. And if we fear Him, then, ultimately speaking, we don’t have to fear anyone or anything else! And so, unlearning our paralyzing fears is really a process of learning to trust in God’s “perfect love” more and more.
Devotedly your pastor,
